Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between embedded storage and R2 cloud storage?
Echo+ and Legacy store files as encrypted data inside your vault — practical for documents and compressed photos but limited to around 10–25 MB per file. Family tier streams files directly to Cloudflare R2 object storage, supporting files up to 2 GB each with no compression and no memory constraints. Your vault only stores a reference key; the actual file lives in R2.
Is my vault really private?
Yes. Your vault is encrypted with AES-256-GCM on your device using a key derived from your master password via PBKDF2. Only the encrypted blob is stored on our servers — we have no way to read your content. R2 media files are access-controlled by your session token — no public URLs exist.
What happens if I miss a check-in?
If you miss your check-in window (Legacy and Family), MyEcho sends a private message to your designated trusted contact. They must confirm before any delivery happens — so a forgotten check-in never triggers delivery by accident.
Can I change my beneficiaries after signing up?
Yes, at any time. Add, remove, or change beneficiaries and reassign items. Changes take effect immediately when you save.
Can I export or delete my data?
Yes. Export a full encrypted backup from Settings at any time. Deleting your account permanently purges all vault data and all R2 media files. You are never locked in.
If I downgrade from Family, what happens to my R2 files?
Your R2 files remain accessible and are still delivered to beneficiaries — you just lose the ability to upload new files via R2. We'll give you 90 days to export or re-upload files before any R2 content is removed.
